01What is Income Statement?

The definition — and what it means in practice.

An income statement (profit and loss statement) is a financial statement that summarises a company’s revenues, costs, and expenses over a specific period, ending in profit or loss. It typically shows key subtotals such as gross profit and operating profit, then arrives at net profit after finance costs and tax. It records performance over time, unlike a balance sheet, which is a snapshot at a date.

For investors, the income statement helps judge whether a company’s profits are growing, stable, or under pressure, and why. It also highlights how sensitive earnings may be to costs, interest rates (through finance costs), or tax. Many valuation and performance measures start from income-statement figures, such as earnings per share (EPS) and profit margins, so it is central to fundamental analysis alongside the balance sheet and cash flow statement.

In plain English

If sales are Rs 100 and total expenses are Rs 80 for the period, the income statement shows profit of Rs 20 (before any extra adjustments).

  • Shows performance over a period: revenues, expenses, and resulting profit or loss.
  • Profit can be viewed at stages: gross, operating, and net profit.
  • Used with the balance sheet and cash flow statement for fundamental analysis.
  • Finance costs and tax can materially change net profit from operating profit.
  • Figures feed into ratios like EPS and profit margins.

02How income statement works on the PSX

The Pakistan-specific rules, conventions, and numbers.

On the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), investors typically encounter the income statement through a listed company’s published financial results and annual reports. It is one of the core statements used to compare companies within a sector, understand earnings quality, and track changes from one reporting period to the next.

Because audited annual accounts are mandatory for listed companies under the Companies Act 2017, investors can use audited income-statement numbers as a baseline for analysis. In practice, many PSX investors link income-statement profitability to dividend expectations, remembering that cash dividends are declared as a percentage of face value (commonly Rs 10), while dividend tax treatment depends on filer status.

03Common misconceptions

Where investors most often get this wrong.

Myth

Profit on the income statement means the company generated the same amount of cash.

Reality

Income statements are prepared on an accrual basis: profits include non-cash items and timing differences. Cash flow is assessed using the cash flow statement.

Myth

Revenue growth automatically means the business is improving.

Reality

Revenue can rise while costs rise faster, squeezing margins. Always check gross profit, operating profit, and net profit, not sales alone.

Myth

Net profit is the only line that matters.

Reality

Net profit matters, but the steps to reach it matter too. Changes in operating costs, finance costs, or one-off items can change the story.
