01What is Listed Company?

The definition — and what it means in practice.

A listed company is a company whose shares are admitted for trading on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) after approvals and ongoing compliance with PSX rules and Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) requirements. Listing typically means the company is subject to continuing disclosures and governance obligations, and its shares can be bought and sold in the secondary market through licensed brokers on the exchange.

For investors, “listed” changes how you access the shares and the information you can reasonably expect. Prices are discovered through exchange trading rather than private negotiation, and trades follow the market’s clearing and settlement process. A listed company also tends to have regular public reporting and shareholder processes, which helps you compare companies, monitor performance, and understand corporate actions such as dividends, rights issues, and bonus shares.

In plain English

If a company is listed, you can place an order through your broker and buy, for example, 100 shares on the PSX instead of negotiating privately.

  • “Listed” means the shares are officially traded on the PSX, not privately transferred.
  • Listing involves SECP/PSX approval and ongoing compliance requirements.
  • Trading in listed shares happens through brokers under exchange rules and processes.
  • Listing usually brings more standardised disclosures and shareholder communications.

02How listed company works on the PSX

The Pakistan-specific rules, conventions, and numbers.

On the PSX, listed-company shares trade in the cash market during the exchange’s sessions and are bought and sold via brokers that hold a Trading Right Entitlement Certificate (TREC) licence. To invest, you need a Unique Investor Number (UIN). After a trade, clearing is handled through the National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL), and shares are held electronically at the Central Depository Company (CDC).

Because listed shares trade on an exchange, price moves can be constrained by daily price limits for most equities (±10% or Re 1 around the previous close (LDCP), whichever is higher). Investors also encounter practical market conventions such as a standard board lot typically being 100 shares. Corporate actions of listed companies (like dividends) flow through exchange-announced dates and shareholder entitlement processes rather than informal arrangements.

03Common misconceptions

Where investors most often get this wrong.

Myth

If a company is listed, its share price cannot fall much.

Reality

Listing does not remove business or market risk. Prices can still move up or down, even if daily price limits may cap the move within a single trading day.

Myth

Listed means the government guarantees the company.

Reality

Listing means the company meets admission and ongoing compliance requirements. It does not guarantee profits, prevent losses, or assure financial strength.

Myth

You own physical share certificates when you buy a listed company’s shares.

Reality

On the PSX, shares are held electronically at the CDC. Your ownership is recorded in the depository system rather than through paper certificates.
