Portfolio
The complete collection of financial investments held by an individual or institution, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and cash.
01—What is Portfolio?
The definition — and what it means in practice.
A portfolio is the complete collection of financial investments owned by a person or institution. It can include shares (stocks), bonds and other fixed-income securities, mutual funds, exchange traded funds (ETFs), and cash or cash-like holdings. A portfolio can be held in one account or spread across multiple accounts, but it is still assessed as one overall set of holdings and exposures.
Portfolio thinking matters because your results come from how the parts work together, not from one holding in isolation. Investors track portfolio value, income (such as dividends), risk and concentration (too much in one share, sector, or theme), and liquidity (how quickly holdings can be sold). Decisions like rebalancing, adding cash, or changing asset allocation are usually made at the portfolio level.
If you own Rs 100,000 of PSX shares plus Rs 50,000 in cash, your portfolio is Rs 150,000 spread across those holdings.
- A portfolio is all your investments combined: shares, funds, fixed income, and cash.
- It can span multiple accounts; the useful view is the total exposure and risk.
- Diversification and concentration are portfolio concepts, not single-stock concepts.
- Portfolio performance includes price changes and cashflows such as dividends.
02—How portfolio works on the PSX
The Pakistan-specific rules, conventions, and numbers.
On the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), many retail investors use the word “portfolio” to mean their positions in listed shares held electronically at the Central Depository Company (CDC) through a broker. Trades are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and clear through NCCPL, so portfolio holdings and cash movements are reflected through these market plumbing arrangements rather than through paper certificates.
A PSX investor typically reviews a portfolio in terms of holdings, average cost, unrealised profit or loss, and expected corporate-action cashflows such as cash dividends. Dividends are often quoted as a percentage of face value (commonly Rs 10), and cash dividends face withholding tax that differs for filers and non-filers. Settlement on the PSX is T+1 (one business day), which affects when cash or shares from trades become available in your account view.
03—Common misconceptions
Where investors most often get this wrong.
My portfolio is only the shares I bought on the PSX.
A portfolio is your complete collection of investments, which can also include cash, mutual funds, and fixed income held outside the PSX.
A diversified portfolio cannot lose money.
Diversification can reduce the impact of any one holding, but the overall portfolio can still fall if markets decline or risks are shared across holdings.
If each stock looks good, the portfolio will automatically be low risk.
Holdings can be highly correlated (for example, concentrated in one sector), so portfolio risk depends on how exposures combine, not just on individual names.

Frequently Asked Questions
A portfolio includes all investments you hold, such as PSX-listed shares, mutual funds, fixed-income securities, and cash. Even if these are held in different accounts, they still form one portfolio when you assess total value, risk, and income.
PSX-listed shares are held electronically at the Central Depository Company (CDC) through your brokerage account. Trading is regulated by the SECP and clearing is handled through NCCPL, which supports the settlement process and the recording of obligations from trades.
Not necessarily. A trading account is where you place orders, while a portfolio is the broader set of investments you own. One portfolio may involve multiple accounts, and one account can contain several types of assets.
Dividends add to total return as cash received in addition to any price change in the shares. On the PSX, dividends are often declared as a percentage of face value, and cash dividends are subject to withholding tax that differs for filers and non-filers.
Settlement on the PSX is T+1, meaning the exchange of cash and shares is completed one business day after the trade. Your portfolio view may show trade execution immediately, but availability of settled cash or shares follows the settlement cycle.
