Frequently Asked Questions
This list ranks liquid PSX companies — market cap above Rs 1 billion, plus the same minimum daily volume filter — by price return over the last three months, biggest decline first. It is the same universe as our Top 3-Month Performers screen, ranked in reverse. The figure is price only, with no dividends added back, and names carrying an unadjusted split, bonus issue or a suspect print inside the window are excluded, so the decline is real and not a data artefact. The table is rebuilt after every trading session as the three-month window rolls forward. A fall of this size can mean deteriorating earnings, a sector-wide de-rating, a governance or regulatory problem, or simply the unwind of an earlier speculative run — and quarterly losers are also where mechanical selling shows up: tax-loss selling, forced liquidation of margin positions, and outflows from names dropped at an index rebalance. Note what this page is not: Top Losers covers the current session only, and Near 52-Week Low ranks by how close a price sits to its one-year low, which is a level rather than a move.
No. A price fall tells you what other people were willing to sell for, not what the business earns. A stock is cheap only if earnings, cash flow and the balance sheet have held up better than the price has; if profits are falling faster than the share price, the stock is more expensive after the decline than before it. Compare the multiple with the sector median on the stock page, or start from the Lowest P/E screen if valuation is what you are hunting.
Work out which of three problems caused the fall: an earnings problem, a balance-sheet problem, or a flow problem. The first two show up in the quarterly result and the debt schedule on the stock page; the third does not, and is the only one that reliably reverses. Start with the company's recent announcements and its board meetings calendar — a profit warning, a regulatory action, an auditor qualification or a plant shutdown usually explains the move.
Top Losers ranks the biggest percentage falls in the current trading session, so it turns over completely every day. Near 52-Week Low ranks by how close the price sits to its lowest point of the past year, which is a level, not a move. This page measures the size of the decline over a full quarter, so a stock can appear here while still trading well above its 52-week low.
Quarterly windows capture flows as much as fundamentals. Tax-loss selling ahead of the fiscal year end, forced liquidation when leveraged positions are margin-called, and selling by funds after a name is dropped at an index rebalance all push prices down for reasons unrelated to earnings. These are the declines most likely to reverse, because nothing about the company's earnings power actually changed.
Some do and some keep falling, and the difference is rarely visible from the price chart alone. Mean reversion tends to work where the cause was temporary — a liquidity squeeze, an index flow, a one-off charge — and fails where the cause was structural, such as a permanent loss of pricing power or a balance sheet that cannot service its debt. Averaging into the second kind is how investors compound losses.
